Sightseeing. To see the best of Madeira you will need to navigate the island by taxi, hire car or by bus

Madeira wine. There are many wine lodges that you can visit and taste Madeira before buying. There are four main varieties of Madeira wine -- Sercial (dry) -- Verdelho (medium dry) -- Bual (medium sweet) -- Malmsey (sweet). We prefer Sercial with crushed ice as an apéritif.

Gardens (Botanical, Blandy's, Monte Tropical, Quinta Boa Vista Orchid) are excellent and well worth a visit.

Boat trips. There are daily trips from Funchal Marina that take you along the coastline to view whales, dolphins, turtles, sea lions.

Museums. Funchal hosts many museums : Natural history, Aquarium, Sugar, Electricity, Furniture, Embroidery, Painting, Sculpture. These are a saviour on a wet day.

Cable cars Funchal to Monte -- Babosas (Monte) to Botanical Gardens -- Achadas da Cruz to the beach -- Rancho near Câmara de Lobos to the beach.

Elevator Fajã dos Padres near Quinta Grande that takes you down to a restaurant and bar.

Porto Santo our neighbouring island can be visited by taking the Lobo Marinho 2 ferryboat. Porto Santo has miles of golden sandy beaches.
